Richard Nelson was admitted in 1975 and has a wide range of experience of law and business.
Having trained with an old established firm, he subsequently moved to Messrs Freeth Cartwright & Sketchley where he became a Partner in 1980.
In 1983, he left to form what became known as Nelsons. As Senior Partner, he was instrumental in the growth of the broad-based practice, leading it to become one of the largest firms in the East Midlands and amongst the largest 50 firms in the country.
He left Nelsons in 2003 to set up the new niche business defence practice in April 2003.
He was invited to become a founder member of the Complex Case Practitioners’ Group and is Vice-Chairman and Secretary of the Serious Fraud Association. The firm is a member of the Specialist Fraud Panel and authorised by the Legal Services Commission to conduct large scale serious or complex frauds.
Richard was consulted by the Government in respect of the proposed changes to the management of fraud cases by the LSC and has tutored and lectured on a wide range of topics during his practising career.
He also has hands-on business experience, having been involved in the management not only of a very substantial firm of Solicitors but also of a number of other businesses and charities. He has held a number of non-executive directorships which has provided further practical insight of relevance to the firm’s work.
In the course of his practising career, he has dealt with some of the largest cases presented in Court. Larger cases often require teams and may involve thousands of hours of preparation but, alongside these, he has also dealt with cases which have taken less than a single day to conclude.
