Herbert Smith establishes new Asia management roles
Monday 12th January 2009

Herbert Smith announced this week a further development of its international management structure, establishing two new regional management roles in Asia.

Hong Kong corporate partner Andrew Tortoishell will become Greater China Managing Partner, responsible for overseeing implementation of the firm's strategy relating to its Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai offices. A partner since 1994, he will report to the head of Asia, Ashley Alder, and liaise closely with regional and global practice area heads on practice development matters.

Austin Sweeney, a corporate partner who is currently head of the firm's Singapore office, will become South East Asia Managing Partner responsible for the development of Herbert Smith's practices in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Austin became a partner in 2004, following a two-year stint in Herbert Smith's Tokyo office.

Austin will also report to Ashley and have similar management responsibilities to Andrew and to Tokyo Managing Partner Steve Lewis.

Ashley Alder commented:

"Cross-office collaboration across our Asia network on client and business development activities is increasing as we build pan-Asian relationships with the firm's multinational clients. Having in place an appropriate regional management structure will, among other benefits, support this collaboration so Andrew's and Austin's appointments mark an important step forward for us."
