How does the economic downturn impact your eligibility for a visa under General Skilled Migration?
Thursday 4th June 2009

The economic downturn has brought forward many of our clients plans to relocate to Australia and has others thinking seriously for the first time about making the move to a more stable economy.

At AMVL we are aware that the current economic downturn that has impacted many countries severely and has lead to reduced working hours or even redundancies. In order to be eligible for General Skilled Migration to Australia, the application is based upon criteria such as qualifications and age, but the main eligibility criteria is based on recent work experience. This means that to consider General Skilled Migration an applicant must have a minimum of 12 out of 24 months work experience immediately before the application is lodged. The work experience must be a minimum of 20 hours per week in a skilled occupation.

If an applicant stops working in their occupation or falls under the 20 hours per week then this may impact their eligibility for a skilled visa in the future.

If you require an assessment of your eligibility for a visa under General Skilled Migration then please do not hesitate to contact info@australianmigrations.com or if you are in Ireland info@australianmigrations.ie

Vetassess to assess certain trades in all countries… Pathway D alternative?

Trades Recognition Australia is one of the toughest skill assessing authorities to obtain a successful skills assessment from. You must have an apprenticeship, traineeship or Australian qualification to meet their assessment criteria.

If an applicant has worked in their trade for 20 years but has no apprenticeship or traineeship then General Skilled Migration is not an option for many. Vetassess was introduced to assess applicants with a minimum of two years work experience in their trade and this time did not have to be part of an apprenticeship or traineeship. However, this pathway was only available to applicants that resided in Sri Lanka, South Africa, the Philippines, the United Kingdom and India.

That was until now.

As of 15 May 2009 if an applicant has one of the below trades they can access the Vetassess skills assessment process. That means with at least two years work experience in one of the below trades will allow a tradesman to apply despite not holding an apprenticeship or traineeship.

The one catch is that regardless of your country of origin the applicant will need to travel to one of the original countries that Vetassess covered for their trade test.

The new assessment process will be open to the following trades:

4311-11 General Electrician (and Supervisors)
4431-11 General Plumber (and Supervisors)
4312-11 Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Mechanic
4211-11 Motor Mechanic (and Supervisors)
4411-11 Carpenter and Joiner (and Supervisors)
4411-13 Carpenter
4411-15 Joiner
4313-11 Electrical Powerline Tradesperson (and Supervisor)
4313-13 Cable Jointer
4414-11 Bricklayer (and Supervisor)

The best way to access this new trade assessment is to have your eligibility for a skilled visa assessed first. This will ensure that before going through the Vetassess process you know whether you will eligible for a visa at the end.
