The England cricket team may have crashed out of the World Cup but one Sheffield lawyer has proved that Brits still have some style when it comes to the game, after returning from a successful tour of South America.
Matthew Dixon, a partner at the Sheffield office of HLW Commercial Lawyers, has just come back from touring Brazil and Chile where he was part of an exclusive team chosen by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
The main purpose of the trip was to play games against the national sides of Brazil and Chile. It was also to encourage the development of the game in these countries by visiting schools with children aged 8 to 14 to try and get them, and the local people, involved in cricket. This was done through coaching sessions and games of Kwik Cricket.
MCC, the original governing body of international cricket, annually sends touring teams to developing cricket nations, to provide the essential funding and training that they require.
This is the second time that Matthew, who has been playing cricket for around 30 years, has participated in an MCC tour of this nature. Two years ago he visited Finland and Estonia to encourage the development of cricket in North Europe.
Matthew said: “It’s a great privilege to be chosen to tour with the MCC again and be given the opportunity to visit amazing places like Brazil and Chile. There were so many highlights it’s difficult to pick out one, but to be able to actively get involved in helping to promote the sport in these countries and to local people is a real honour.”
Andrew Hartley, senior partner at HLW added: “The firm is delighted that Matthew took part in such a worthwhile tour and we fully supported his decision to participate. We are proud of our sporting links and the work that we have done for sports people and organisations and we hope to continue this association in future.”
HLW has represented a number of famous sporting names including England cricket captain, Michael Vaughan, boxing champion Junior Witter, who has recently retained his WBC light-welterweight belt at Alexandra Palace, and ex-Sheffield Wednesday and England midfielder Carlton Palmer.
