Tennis coach 'awarded £4m after crash left him paralysed'
Thursday 19th January 2012

A tennis coach who was paralysed after being thrown from his bike by a Land Rover in 2009 has been awarded £4 million in compensation.

Patrice Gougam, who is now 55, was struck by Michael Elliot's vehicle on the Great North Road between Barnett and Potters Bar and the accident put him in a coma for three weeks.

The sports enthusiast spent six months at the National Hospital for Neurosurgery and Neurology in Bloomsbury for six months for the near-fatal brain injury he suffered.

After 21 months of treatment, Mr Gougam still requires 24-hour care and requires a wheelchair to get around and needs to be fed through a tube.

At the time of the collision, Michael Elliott, now 66, was being treated for glaucoma and cataracts and should not have been behind the wheel of a car.

Haulier David Collins may also be pursuing a compensation settlement after he was left paralysed when metal tubes crushed his legs while working for Bury's Spectra Scaffolding in November 2005.
